The Legend of
Mermaid’s Tears

One mermaid so loved a ship's captain that she didn't want to see him end his days in the sea. When the captain lost his footing aboard the ship during a storm and fell overboard, rather than call him to her the mermaid calmed the sea to save him. This was a tragic mistake for her: although mermaids have all the powers of the sea within their grasp they are forbidden by Neptune to use them to interfere in human affairs. As punishment, she was banned to the bottom of the ocean, never again to swim to the surface or see her beloved captain. Her tears are said to come to us as beautiful pieces of glass in stunning, crystallized colours. http://tinyurl.com/72xd22q

Last November I was honored to be the featured teller at Voice Mail, a wonderful, adult storytelling venue produced by Connecticut Storyteller Carolyn Stearns. (Find Voicemail on Facebook by following this link: http://tinyurl.com/88nlj6v .) The last tale I shared was my adaptation of a short story my aunt brought back from her trip to Germany. At the end of the program I passed around a basket filled with pieces of sea glass; I invited everyone to choose one in the hopes they would remember the message of the story long after we parted.

This week, Carolyn sent me a picture of the sea glass she picked that evening, which had been transformed by the gifted hands of her friend into a gorgeous necklace. I am thrilled that one of the stories I shared that evening will now travel with her always in a new form.

A bit of background information on these gifts from the sea.

It is said that it takes a minimum of three years for the waves, sand and tide to wear the broken glass down to the likeness of a raw gem or for a better term, what you now call beach glass.
Glass beads have been discovered in Egypt dating back to 2500 B.C.
Cleopatra favored glass in her jewelry.
Mythology and the folklore of fishermen and sailors say they are “Mermaid’s Tears”.
The value of sea glass is greatly determined by color.
One of the most exciting finds is a piece of red sea glass, “The Ruby” of the sea and very rare. The odds of obtaining such a piece are 1 in 5000.
Sea glass is frosty, smooth, pitted, and glistening in appearance. This process is most often achieved over decades if not centuries.
Uncommon colors of sea glass include a type of green. These colors are found once in every 50 to 100 pieces
Extremely rare colors include gray, pink, teal, black, yellow, turquoise and red.
Orange is the least common type of sea glass, found once in about 10,000 pieces.

We are about to welcome a New Year and that means preparations for the LANES Northeast Storytelling Conference (formerly known as the Sharing the Fire Conference) are rolling along. This year the conference will be in a new location, Albany, New York, on March 16-18, 2012. I am always seeking new ways to help my storytelling students visualize their stories. A few weeks ago the idea of using a camera popped into my head. How could I use this in class? I devised the following work sheet called Story Snapshot.

Since my program takes place immediately after school I try to limit "at the desk" activities. This was designed to be fairly quick and easy. However, this type of exercise is important to help the students step into their story and connect with their characters. I tried it for the first time last week. Below are the instructions I gave before they began; I asked them to think about it for five minutes before they put pencil to paper.

o Imagine you are a newspaper photographer.

o You have just come upon a scene in your story.

o You pick up the camera; look through the lens, focus and click!

o Describe the picture you just took.

As I was explaining the exercise to the children one girl raised her hand and said, “You’re asking us to visualize, right?” Bingo! These are some of the answers I received. I think you will agree that it worked.

Where are you?

o The north side of the world

o   A village
o   On a beach
o   On a mountain
o   African savanna
o   On farm land

Who is there?

o A magic fish

o Old man, tiger and cricket

o The crow and the Inuit

o The innkeeper

Describe the landscape.

o Many trees, bright green grass and some flowers

o Marshland

o A very fine palace, a few trees and very nice security system

o Dirty road

o Dark and wet

What do you smell?

o Cake

o Dirt and moss

o The smell of tree sap

o Fresh, crisp air

o Salt from the sea

o Pine and dogs

o Bread, butter and milk

What do you feel?

o Nervous and scared

o Leaves falling down

o The spray from the waves splashing on the shore

o Wind blowing on my face

Describe the weather.

o Cold air, fog coming in from the water

Describe one of the characters in the scene?

o   The princess has four foot long hair.
o   Tired, worn out and dirty from the garden.
o   He is wearing a red and black striped shirt.

o He has a beard and is covered in pieces of wood. (The character is a woodcutter)

o The frog is as ugly as a potato that has gone to seed.

o The man is short with clean, blond hair and dirty clothes.

What emotion did the camera capture on their face?

o A frightened look of begin discovered

o The princess is crying happy tears

o A sly but passionate look

o Depressed

Describe their body language/gestures.

o On his knees, bending over

o Her hands came out and her jaw dropped.

o He has his head in his hands.

o He is crying, sitting on a stump.

Wisdom, Wit and Wonder - Fabulous Fairy Tales!

Recently, my colleagues and I have been discussing the lasting importance of fairytales amidst the plethora of personal stories on festival stages and at story slams. Don't misunderstand me, I love a well-told personal tale; I have taken part in story slams and strongly support my local organization, massmouth.org. The current popularity of that genre offers the wonderful benefit of introducing a younger audience to the art of oral tradition. However, more than ever it seems as if the old tales are being relegated back to the nursery and adults assume fairy tales are for children.

In doing a bit of research for this post I came across this wonderful quote:

"Once upon a time, back when animals spoke and rivers sang and every quest was worth going on, back when dragons still roared and maidens were beautiful and an honest young man with a good heart and a great deal of luck could always wind up with a princess and half the kingdom - back then, fairytales were for adults...." Neil Gaiman

It is my hope that one day telling fairytales will be as mainstream and hip as The Moth and its facsimilies around the country. So here is short list of antique books on line, filled with stories. In the new year I will research and post more; the possibilites are endless.

Fairytales contain the wisdom, wit and wonder of the ages. Give them a try and you just might be swept away by story!

'Tis the Season - Christmas Stories From Around the World

The Christmas holiday is just around the corner and it's time to add some fun, facts and mirth to your day, and stories to your repertoire!

A bit of background on the man in the red suit; he is known by a variety of names around the world. Whether you call him Saint Nicholas, Santa Claus or Sinterklaas, may you feel the magic he brings to the season and surrounded by those you love.

In Holland, Santa Claus is known as Sinterklaas tradition.
In Spain, every year Santa Claus comes by steamboat.
In the United States Santa Claus is described as a plump, cheerful, white-bearded man wearing a red coat with white collar and cuffs, red trousers and white-cuffed, and a black leather belt and boots (picture of himself rarely has a beard with no mustache)
Santa Claus as we know him in the United States and Canada became popular in the 19^th century.
In the UK and Europe, he is usually called Father Christmas.
The real Santa Claus, also known as St. Nicholas was born in Turkey and was buried in the city of Bari, Southern Italy.
It is said he was born at Patara in Lycia, a province of Asia Minor and was known for his extraordinary devoutness, passion and many astonishing miracles. He died at Myra, and was buried in his cathedral.

Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month. I offer you some information and sites to further your knowledge of the traditions, cultural and stories of the first Americans.

One of the proponents of American Indian Day was Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca Indian, director of the Museum of Arts and Science in Rochester, N.Y.
The Boy Scouts of America were the first to set aside a day for the “First Americans.”
In 1915, the annual Congress of the American Indian Association formally adopted a plan concerning American Indian Day. Their president, Rev. Sherman Coolidge, an Arapahoe called upon the country to observe such a day.
September 28, 1915 – President Coolidge issue proclamation, declaring the second Saturday of each May as American Indian Day.
December 14, 1915 – Red Fox James, a Blackfoot Indian presented endorsements of 24 state governments at the White House.
1990 President George H.W. Bush designated November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month.”

November will soon be upon us and instead of spending your nights alone come out and feast your ears and eyes at these amazing
Tellabration's™ happening around the country. Some are strictly for adults, others for family audiences; there is sure to be something that strikes your fancy, warms your heart and teases the laughter right out of you!

Tellabration was invented by storyteller and past board member of the Connecticut Storytelling Center, J.G. Pinkerton also known as “Paw-Paw" Pinkterton. Tellabration began on November 18, 1988 as a way to re-introduce adults to the art of storytelling. Since then, Tellabration™ events have been held on every continent except Antarctica! The event is now under the auspices of the National Storytelling Network and there are more events listed at their link.
