The Chinese New Year begins on Saturday, February 10, 2024, marking the start of a new lunar year and 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon.

The Wood Dragon is a symbol of power, nobility, and success, representing honor, courage, and tenacity. People born in the Year of the Dragon are said to be ambitious, energetic, and charismatic, inspiring others with their passion and enthusiasm. They are considered to be natural leaders, confident and unafraid to take risks, making them magnetic personalities in social and professional circles.

I originally offered this blog in 2011 but since 2023 is also the Year of the Rabbit I am sharing it again, along with additional stories and resources.

The Chinese New Year begins on January 22, 2023 until February 9, 2024. The Rabbit is the fourth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 animal signs. 










These are some of the traits of those born in the Year of the Rabbit:

January is National Soup Month and who doesn’t love soup! Soup is as old as cooking, dating back to 20,000 BC. I grew up in the city of New Bedford, which has a rich, cultural food history thanks to the thousands of Portuguese families who immigrated here centuries ago to work in the whaling industry. They brought their amazing recipes with them, including kale soup, which is now a staple in many homes. You will see Kale Soup, on most restaurant menus, as well as New England Clam Chowder or seafood chowder (a rich, creamy soup). In the summer there are even chowder festivals around New England.

Chinese New Year 2022: Year of the Water Tiger

2022 is the Year of the Water Tiger in the Chinese New Year. “The Tiger is the third sign of the Chinese Zodiac and is thought of as Ruler of the beasts on Earth. It is believed that a person born in the year of the Tiger is courageous, optimistic, tolerant, and generous. They can expect a long life, and were born to command, not to obey.”

- The tiger is one of the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals.
- Tigers represent royalty in eastern Asia. In fact, the marking on the tiger’s forehead looks very similar to the Chinese character that is

- The White Tiger represents the west of China as well as the season  of autumn. It is one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese Constellation.
