I originally offered this blog in 2011 but since 2023 is also the Year of the Rabbit I am sharing it again, along with additional stories and resources.

The Chinese New Year begins on January 22, 2023 until February 9, 2024. The Rabbit is the fourth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 animal signs. 










These are some of the traits of those born in the Year of the Rabbit:

• Reasonable
• Friendly
• Wise, fragile, tranquil, and serene,
• Considerate
• Diplomatic
• Organized
• Affectionate, co-operative, and pleasant.
• They can also make great painters or musicians due to their sense of beauty and their love of creativity.

FACTS ABOUT UKRAINE

• Ukrainian civilizations date back to 4800 B.C. The country is located in an area where Trypillian and Scythian civilizations thrived.
• Ukraine is home to seven sites protected by the UNESCO World Heritage L
• The world’s first constitution was drafted and introduced in 1710 by Ukrainian Hetman Pylyp Orlyk.
• Ukraine is the world's largest producer of sunflower seeds. It is estimated that the total size of Ukraine’s sunflower farmlands could cover the entire territory of Slovenia.
• The vast tracts of arable land in Ukraine with fertile black soil made it an ideal place for growing wheat and other food crops. As such, it was nicknamed the "Breadbasket of Europe.” Today, Ukraine continues to be one of the largest producers of wheat in the world.
• The gas lamp was invented by two Lviv-based pharmacists - Jan Zeh and Ignacy Łukasiewicz in 1853.

This is the seventh in my series, highlighting the rich diversity of folktales, fairy tales, legends, and myths from around the world. My hope is that this will make it easier for you to find new and unique tales to add to your repertoire, and in the process, we will learn more about our global neighbors.

Since the Olympics began in Beijing a few days ago I thought it made sense to highlight China this time around. The country of China is divided into thirty-one provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions. I encourage you to conduct further research on the specific region and/or culture behind the stories. January is National Soup Month and who doesn’t love soup! Soup is as old as cooking, dating back to 20,000 BC. I grew up in the city of New Bedford, which has a rich, cultural food history thanks to the thousands of Portuguese families who immigrated here centuries ago to work in the whaling industry. They brought their amazing recipes with them, including kale soup, which is now a staple in many homes. You will see Kale Soup, on most restaurant menus, as well as New England Clam Chowder or seafood chowder (a rich, creamy soup). In the summer there are even chowder festivals around New England.

“Diwali or Deepavali is one of the biggest and auspicious festivals celebrated by Hindus all around the globe. The festival of lights signifies peace and joy, the victory of good over evil, and light over darkness every day. It is one of the most symbolic Hindu festivals, and all the communities in the country celebrate it with much pomp. During this festival, people clean their homes, decorate every corner with lights, lamps, diyas, flowers, rangoli, and candles. Families also perform Lakshmi Puja and pray to the Goddess of wealth to bless them with health, wealth, and prosperity.”
